Firefox update support extended for Windows 7 and 8
Firefox developer Mozilla has announced that it is extending browser support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 operating systems until April 2025. This decision means that the previously set deadline of September 2024 has been postponed. This means that the company will continue to support the legacy systems of millions of users.
Mozilla’s decision is motivated by the fact that a significant number of users are still actively using older Windows versions. The company said it will continue to provide security updates as part of the Firefox 115 Extended Support Release (ESR) until April 1, 2025.
Of course, it should be reminded that Microsoft has ended its support for these operating systems. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 lost official support in 2020 and 2023 respectively. Many companies such as Google also stopped updating their applications.
Other popular browsers Chrome and Edge stopped supporting Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 in January 2023 after Microsoft’s support period expired. With this decision, Mozilla is giving Firefox users more time to update their systems or switch to an alternative browser.
Mozilla also stated that it is difficult to release security packages to older versions that do not receive updates from Microsoft. However, it emphasized that it made this extension by prioritizing user security.
